September 23, 1936 - June 15, 2020
On June 15, 2020, Robert L. Berger, father and grandfather, of Lower Burrell, passed at age 83 at his home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Bob grew up in Allegheny Township, the youngest son of the late Victor A. Berger and Sarah L. Swanger Berger. As a young boy, Bob was a Boy Scout and worked at his parents' country store, Berger's Service, located on Garvers Ferry Road, Allegheny Township. Known for cruising around in his blue Plymouth, Bob graduated from Freeport High School in 1955. Bob attended technical school and trained to be a skilled machinist. He retired from Hetrick Manufacturing in 2002. A third-generation family business owner, Bob was the proprietor of the Knight Spot, a popular tavern and dining establishment in New Kensington. Prior to the Knight Spot, Bob co-owned Well-Come Inn in Lower Burrell with his parents and brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Patricia Berger. Bob proudly served in the Army Reserve as a Staff Sergeant from 1956 to 1962. Bob never missed a Steelers game. He loved too much candy, too many sweets and sharing his birthday with daughter Vicki. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and his beloved cat Merlin. Bob enjoyed playing cards and dining around town. He traveled far and wide in Old Red, his Ford Ranger, for the perfect trees and plants to add to his beautifully landscaped yard that he enjoyed tending to. Bob passed on to his children and grandchildren the value of hard work and the ability to sing out of tune with the car radio. Bob valued his lifelong friendship with good friend and dining buddy, John "Wolfie" Brunner. Bob's endearing smile will be missed by his family of three children and their spouses, Debra (daughter) and Barry Russell, Robert, Jr. (son) and Jill Berger, and Vicki (daughter) and Eric Pugh, his five grandchildren, Lauren Russell, Jason Berger, Dr. Tyler Berger, Rebecca Pugh and Austin Pugh, his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Patricia Berger, a niece, two nephews, and good friend, John "Wolfie" Brunner. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Victor J. Berger.
