Susan Mead

Susan Mead, 83, died on October 23, 2024, in Pittsburgh, PA, where she had lived most of her life. She was the second of three children of Charles and Janet (Sealts) McClain. She was born in Ohio and spent her childhood in Ohio and Indiana. She attended several universities, Carleton, U of IL at Chicago, PITT, and lived in MN, CA, RI, IL, and PA, in all of which she developed strong friendships with women and involvement in feminist causes. She was accomplished academically and did graduate work and teaching in women's studies, in addition to working at MSA. Susan was very interested in progressive politics and was active in several organizations focused on change. She loved music and took advantage of many opportunities Pittsburgh offers to enjoy live performances. Kindness and generosity were qualities Susan exemplified in her relationships with all. Susan enjoyed spending time with family and friends, at cultural events, art fairs, hosting potluck meals, walking in Frick Park, attending BRITE, and the Three Rivers Rowing Club. Important persons in Susan's life were her daughter, Stephanie Montemurro (Nick); granddaughter, Sophie; brother, Chuck McClain in OH, sister, Judith M Gibson in NE, niece, Sarah Gibson in NC, special friends, Amy De Chicchis, and Nina Sowiski, along with many other close and loved friends. The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at Woodside Place and The Willows who were so kind, respectful, and patient with Susan. Special thanks to Amanda Betler for her many hours spent maximizing Susan's physical condition and happiness. In addition, Pamela and Cheyenne Francis offered loving care and companionship at just the right time. Thanks to all who gave hugs and provided a shoulder to lean on when needed. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm and 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd; 930 Center Avenue Blawnox, PA, 15238 As Susan wished, cremation will occur.
